In the 18th century, in Parma, Italia, there was fine printer and typographer named Giambattista Bodoni -- his work was called by many of his time and since, as the exemplar of sophistication in design. Beautiful books, exquisite typefaces, amazing sense of airiness and restraint. The type of our masthead is custom designed and hand-drawn by Tim Girvin and his team in NYC | Seattle, creating a perfection on the classics from centuries past, to a new revised and refined titling treatment -- just for us!   Sniffapalooza Magazine Banner by Tim Girvin

James Dotson. As soon as he could crawl, James dragged himself into the garden and began smelling the scented pelargoniums and purple bearded iris. He began precociously reading peculiar old herb books and attempted to prepare Hungary Water from rosemary. Since alchemy was not a contemporary career choice, he became a psychiatrist with a fondness for deeply strange things. His current interests include the neuropsychiatric aspects of olfaction, cross-disciplinary studies of smell, healing and magical perfumes, and all things odorous. James enjoys meeting fellow flaireurs and olfactophiles and feels they represent a superevolved form of humanity.
Victoria Austin is a passionate accomplished dreamer, hopeful romantic, spiritually attuned-grounded and musically diva-ish.  She spent her childhood days dreaming, exploring the forest trails and gleaming streams.  She now lives in a sprawling metropolis, but still a jewel of a city in north Texas and her wonderful family. She loves traveling and experiencing new places, people, cultures and foods. She also enjoys reading great books, writing, singing, acting and playing several musical instruments, cooking, decorating, beauty and fashion, music, movies, live theater, and learning foreign languages.  She enjoys thought provoking discussions and communicating with interesting people. Her new hobby is collecting unique boutique and niche fragrances from Serge Lutens, L'Artisan and Andy Tauer to name a few.  Victoria and her family also love working with Habitat for Humanity.

Kathy Patterson has had an interest in fragrance all her life.  Some of her fondest memories involve digging through her mother's toiletries and playing with her scented soaps.  (She hated Mom's Youth Dew though.)  At the ripe age of 40, Kathy discovered niche scents and Sniffapalooza.  Now she's getting out of hand with the perfume collection, and her husband Neal thinks she's maybe a little crazy.  Kathy is a jewelry designer/graphic artist/research analyst who lives in Baltimore, MD with her loving hubby and two cats.  You can find her all over the place as theminx, including her site, http://theminx.com.

Kilian Hennessy, Founder of By Kilian.  Kilian Hennessy, the soft spoken and charming ’scentsation” behind the By Kilian fragrance brand, could easily have walked out of 19th century France, realized that PDAs and cell phones are extremely useful, and decided to stay awhile in the 21st century to shake things up....

Creed Love In Black
Bergdorf Goodman

"The latest Creed, Love in Black, definitely has mysterious undertones meant to evoke images of Jackie Kennedy.  Love In Black is the most beguiling fragrance I think I have ever experienced and I do not say that lightly.  This gentle, woody violet is, at first, a soft whisper in its understated presence and then it takes a surprisingly sensuous turn..." full review here

Love Among the Spices
Cinnamon Peeler
by Michael Ondaatje

Love Among the Spices

This poem was written by Michael Ondaatje. It was sent to me by Michael Davis, a 'friend in fragrance' from Atlanta. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful odes to love using our fifth sense as its lingua franca.

The Cinnamon Peeler

If I were a cinnamon peeler
I would ride your bed
and leave the yellow bark dust
on your pillow.

Your breasts and shoulders would reek
you could never walk through markets
without the profession of my fingers
floating over you.

The blind would
stumble certain of whom they approached
though you might bathe
under the rain gutters, monsoon.

Here on the upper thigh
at this smooth pasture
neighbour to your hair
or the crease
that cuts your back. This ankle.

You will be known among strangers
as the cinnamon peeler's wife.

I could hardly glance at you
before marriage
never touch you
- your keen nosed mother, your rough brothers.

I buried my hands
in saffron, disguised them
over smoking tar,
helped the honey gatherers...

When we swam once
I touched you in the water
and our bodies remained free,
you could hold me and be blind of smell.

You climbed the bank and said
this is how you touch other women
the grass cutter's wife, the lime burner's daughter.

And you searched your arms
for the missing perfume
and knew
what good is it
to be the lime burner's daughter
left with no trace
as if not spoken to in the act of love
as if wounded without the pleasure of a scar.

You touched
your belly to my hands
in the dry air and said
I am the cinnamon
peeler's wife.  Smell me.

-- Michael Ondaatje

Sniffapalooza Magazine cult favorite, James Dotson takes us on a journey
of the fragrant spirit world...

"In the19th century, during the heyday of Spiritualism, seance circles were full of mysterious raps and more flamboyant ghostly communications.  Among the most spectacular phenomenon were phantoms that temporarily assumed a solid form, or “materializations.”  William Moses was an Oxford educated minister, and one of the most scholarly and well-respected mediums of the 1870’s. During his seance circles, pearls and precious stones appeared from thin air, columns of light hovered over the sitters, and ethereal concerts played on invisible instruments.  But a more unusual feature of his mediumistic sessions, was the spontaneous oozing of scented oil from his head, or the mists of perfume from the ceiling including beautiful rains of verbena, hay, musk, sandalwood and roses.  He described some of these phenomenon in his notebooks" ....

Ralph Lauren Notorious is a new perfume for women inspired by Hitchcock's classics and other Hollywood movies. This new perfume will arrive to the market in autumn 2008 and will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the best seller of the house of Romance. Like the great screenwriters and film directors of our time, Ralph Lauren is one of the world’s best storytellers. His fashion, lifestyle and fragrance brand is built upon captivating narratives of elegance, romance and understated glamour. He creates entire worlds with his cinematic eye and visionary imagination. Moved by the sexy, mysterious, self-possessed women from the golden age of film glamour, Ralph Lauren presents Notorious, a new fragrance of timeless intrigue and boundless desire.

Notorious is a fragrance which introduces the old Hollywood glamour. She is desirable and magnetic, audacious and voracious. Her enduring persona is as entrancing today as it was yesterday and is tomorrow. Ralph Lauren pays tribute to the Notorious Woman – the daring, dangerous, heart-stopping siren who leaves men speechless in her wake.

Her smoldering but subtle sexiness creates an air of intrigue and danger, as personified by Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair and Chinatown, defined by Lauren Bacall in the film noir masterpiece The Big Sleep, and embodied by Ingrid Bergman in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Notorious. Intriguing, bold and confident, these Notorious Women have emboldened the passion and fascination of every era.

“The roles have made me famous, but my life has made me Notorious,” says Laetitia Casta, the French model and actress who stars as the sultry face of Notorious in a new advertising campaign by Michael Thompson that will debut in September 2008.

The perfume was created by perfumer Olivier Gillotin of Givaudan, a sparkling spiced oriental, to be as provocative and commanding as the woman who wears it.  Chocolate Cosmos, a decadent, chocolate-scented burgundy flower, is used for the first time ever in Notorious. It evokes floral decadence in the mid-notes along with charismatic White Frost Peonies and Fiery Carnations. Deep Black Currant energizes the scent, sparkling with other top notes of Spicy Pink Peppercorn and Italian Bergamot. Anchored by the base note of Patchouli Musk, created from vintage Patchouli aged in oak barrels for five years, seductive Vanilla and Orris captivate.

Top Notes: Black Currant, Spicy Pink Peppercorn and Italian Bergamot, Mid Notes:Chocolate Cosmos, White Frost Peonies, Fiery Carnation, Base Notes:Patchouli Musk, Vanilla, Orris

need media personalities nor anyone else telling them what is masculine. I consider myself to be a real man in that I define my self-identity as a masculine male in my own terms....

Bringing Sexy Back

‘Sniffas’ are aficionados of fragrance. We sniff, spritz, analyze, and test fragrance with knowledge and experience. “Is that a chypre, hmmm, the oak moss really comes through”, or “I wonder if that is Haitian Vetiver or Javanese”.

Thanks to the transparency of many of our most beloved perfumers (by Kilian actually posts formulas on its website), Sniffapalooza workshops, bloggers , critics,  and the world wide web our  heads are crammed with professional words; top note, long tail, sillage, molecular chains, (and even words that  marketing groups invent such as  ‘ampur’). We know our extraits from our cologne; our amber from our ambergris (lovely hardened chunks of whale vomit). As a writer, some of my own articles are as chock a block of esoteric terminology as a chemistry thesis.

Cerebral yes, sexy… not one bit. Its time to bring sexy back.

Why do we wear fragrance? For most of us, it’s a sensory form of self-expression.
But if we cut through the clutter of jargon, and really examine the power of scent at its most elemental level, it’s all about pheromones that attract. Even the word sensual sounds like the word scent. Deep down, we want to be ‘sexy’.

Sexy is one of those words that immediately evoke visual or mental images; a particular physical appearance perhaps, or is it power, influence or intellect.

My take on sexy? Confidence… the ULTIMATE aphrodisiac. And there are two fragrances that I wear that are sexy as hell (for me), Osmanthus by Ormonde Jayne and X by Clive Christian. Wearing these particular fragrances turn me on, and if they can do that, they ‘turn on’ others.

According to Linda Pilkington, Perfumer and Founder of the cult fragrance line Ormonde Jayne,  “Osmanthus is sexy ………..because it exudes pure and simple passion and awakens the senses. The Osmanthus woman doesn’t shout for attention, but expects it and gets it. Osmanthus is a perfume pulsating with great honesty and beauty. It doesn’t compete with you but adds to your natural panache”.

Exactly so, when I wear Osmanthus, it’s a gentle, intimate confidence. You must be very close to me to smell it. If you are that close, then it’s a personal statement.  I like you. I know you. I am allowing you to get close to me.

There are times when I want to project all out glamour, even when I am wearing
jeans and a tee shirt.  That is when I wear X by Clive Christian. Heads turn,
especially male ones. Women whisper and shyly ask me for the name of my fragrance.
They write it down.

Last week, I went to a reunion, and my long ago secret crush (who never even knew
my name) was as pesky as a mosquito.  “Wow, you look great. You smell great.
Why haven’t we met before”?  I smiled, uttered a few pleasantries and walked away,
my X wafting.

I asked Victoria Christian, (daughter of Clive and head of Global Media and Events
for the Company) about the ‘X Factor’. Victoria explained, “The X perfumes were created
to capture that moment of electricity when you catch eyes with someone across a crowded
room and then cannot stop looking back...the perfumes are unconventional in that the heart
notes are the main focus and are quite simply some of the most powerful natural aphrodisiacs mankind has ever known.

X for women oozes Egyptian Jasmine, echoing the infamous Cleopatra and
her capture of Marc Anthony's heart using the intoxicating essence as she sailed towards him -deep, sultry, sensual - and dotted with tempting fruits like pink peach, mandarin, rhubarb to keep the nose addicted and coming back time and again...I have never known a woman who wears it or a man who smells it to be disappointed."

Take time to really experience your favorite fragrances. Find one or two that bring out the’ inner you’. Watch what happens as your smile is a little brighter, as you stand a little taller and as you exude confidence.

Leave the note pad at home as well as those long tails.

Osmanthus is and for now, ONLY available in the USA through their beautiful e-boutique available at http://www.ormondejayne.com/
and X by Clive Christian is available at www.bergdorfgoodman.com
