In September of 2009, McClain traveled with six friends to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico to volunteer at the Casa de los Angeles, a day care center for orphans and children of single mothers. During her stay, she formed a deep connection with the children and from this experience, she started formulating a fragrance to transmit a sense of compassion to anyone who would come across it. McClain’s aim is to explore how memory can be transmitted through a scent to influence an individual’s present experience. In partnership with the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn and the New York City Parks Department, the fountain will be placed in McGolrick Park in the summer of 2010.
About ANNE MCCLAIN
Anne McClain is a graduate of the Grasse Institute of Perfumery in the south of France. She turned to the fine art of perfumery after an extended interest in photography as a way to flatten an experience into something tangible, yet ethereal. Anne also enjoys learning about aromatherapy to understand the psychological effects that the distilled oils of the flowers, resins, barks, peels, leaves and other plant materials have on the mind. Prior to attending perfumery school, she attended Brown University where she took classes in religion, creative arts, the environment, philosophy and neuroscience. She designed an independent major which later became an established major, “Contemplative Studies”. Its mission, “to develop a coordinated program in this rapidly emerging field that focuses on many of the ways that human beings have found, across cultures and across time to concentrate, broaden and deepen conscious awareness as the gateway to cultivating their full potential and to leading more meaningful and fulfilling lives”.
